Topic: Recognizing signs/notices in public
places
Introduction: Signs/notices give us important information. If we don’t
obey what the signs say, would be a problem. Most signs are made from metal,
plastic, wood or other material. Some signs have letters and some have
pictures; others signs have both_ letters and pictures
Purpose:
This lesson is about reading and writing sign/notices and
to have the students to understand the signs/ notice in English / ELF.
Objective:
Students
will be able to …
- Identify signs in public places.
- Identify written words for signs in public places.
- Can write some sign/notice.
Target
vocabulary: Information, food, telephone, restrooms (women and
men), disabled toilet, fire exit, no smoking

Introduction
This lesson
teaches the meaning of signs/notices in public places. Students practice speaking, listening, reading and writing. This will support development of sound
letter- correspondence and whole word recognition, within a safe and
predictable framework. The last activity is to practice handwriting and
consolidate.
Ice broken:
Tell the
class that sign/notices are put in public places often for a good reason. They
are concise and clear for everybody to see and do as they are told. Add that
most notices/sign often written in big colorful letters and many include
pictures besides the text. Ask to students:

that you have seen in English? Which?
Then write
some notices on the board and ask to students where they could be found.

Note: Help the student to understand
the meaning.
Comprehension:
To do this,
make flashcards.
- Using the sign flashcards, show the students the signs and what they mean. Ask students to name them and repeat.
- Using the word flashcards, point out initial letter sounds. Ask students to read them and repeat.
Note: This
stage is to ensure the students understand the signs and start to connect the
written form of a word with the spoken form.
Listening:
- Distribute listening worksheet.
- Demonstrate, on the board, what it means to circle an item.
- Announce the first item and look at the papers to make sure that everyone has circled one item in line 1.
- Announce items for the other questions. Students circle the items.
- Collect the sheets to mark later.
Mix
activity:
- Distribute cut-up word/picture cards around the class. Give the quickest students more cards.
- Ask students to mix and find the word or sign that matches their card and bring it to you to check. This gives students the opportunity to consult each other, negotiate and come to an agreement without feeling self conscious.
- Once completed successfully, repeat activity to increase confidence. activity to increase confidence.
- The stronger ones can be peer teacher too.
Writing
activity:
- Give your students vocabulary sheet to complete a worksheet sequence to practice with the words by following the exercise sequence.
- Give out pencils, pens and colored paper and ask students to copy the words in capital letters to make notices to put on the walls.
Homework:
Ask students to look around when they
go shopping and make a note of other signs they see. Examples:
- Don’t keep the grass!
- Open 24 hours!
- AM/PM
Note:
The students do not always understand that they are choosing. Working in
pairs is a good form to help. For listening activity you can read the words or
use the audio.
Assessment:
- Create and write notices/signs about the school.
Give to
students a chance to write notices/signs ( in English) about the school life,
the students’ attitude and behavior ( miss lesson, late, forget stationery,
writing on desks, droop trash on the floor... Point the problems or hint your
pupils to detect the problems themselves and ask them to write notices to
remind themselves that things change for the better. Suggestion:
